What’s the best way to lose weight? You probably want to know that before you even begin your journey, right? 

Sadly, there isn’t one answer to that question. However, one thing all weight loss methods have in common is that they require some level of effort, time, and dedication from the person who wants to get healthier.

Whether you’re working out to lose weight or just maintain your physique, it’s important to make exercise a daily routine. 

Exercise is not just beneficial for your body—it can be beneficial for your mind as well. 

Make sure you get out of bed and into action each day, because life (and weight loss) is about progress and momentum. 

Start small: Increase how much you move over time. 

The more active you are, and the longer you stay active, will determine how quickly and effectively you reach your goals. 

To lose weight safely but quickly: It’s important to choose activities that are fun and energizing.

 

Drink Water Before Meals

Drinking water before meals helps you feel full quicker, meaning you’ll be less likely to overeat at mealtime. 

Plus, water is calorie-free! It’s also important to drink plenty of water throughout your day. 

Why? Drinking more water means that more calories are being flushed out of your system, leaving you with fewer total calories in your body.

 

Eat Slowly

Eating slowly is a great weight loss tip because it gives your body time to recognize that you’re full and have had enough food. 

Eating quickly tends to make us overeat, so it’s important to eat at a regular pace and chew your food well. 

Chewing increases stomach acid production and stimulates digestion—it also makes you more mindful of what you’re eating.

 

Keep a Journal of All Food & Drinks Consumed

Recording everything you eat and drink during your day will help you establish better habits. 

If you don’t keep track of what and how much you consume, it can be easy to forget about all of those little indulgences that add up over time. 

Record everything in a notebook or on your smartphone for easy logging, or utilize an app like My FitnessPal to help track these details.

 

Keep Active While Watching TV

An easy way to add a few extra calories burned to your day is by doing some calisthenics while you watch TV. Jogging in place, squatting, jumping jacks, push-ups, and crunches can easily be done while watching an hour of television. You'll burn about 250 calories for every hour you exercise during TV time. That may not seem like much, but over five days that's 1,000 extra calories!

 

Take the Stairs Instead of the Elevator

If you have to take an elevator, use it when others aren’t around. If you have to walk up a flight of stairs at work, do so during your lunch break. Try fitting in as many flights of stairs as possible on your days off. This will help with more than just weight loss—it will keep you fit and healthy overall.

 

Maintain a Healthy Body Mass Index (BMI)

BMI is a measure of body fat based on height and weight that applies to adult men and women. 

To calculate your BMI, multiply your weight in pounds by 703, divide that figure by your height in inches, then divide that figure by your height again.

 

Limit Alcoholic Beverages

Alcoholic beverages contain empty calories and can make it harder to stick to a weight loss diet. 

In fact, alcohol is highly calorie-dense — meaning each drink contains quite a few calories. 

If you’re trying to lose weight or maintain your current weight, make sure you don’t consume more than 1 drink per day for women and 2 drinks per day for men. 

Otherwise, consider giving up alcoholic beverages all together; it will have little effect on your overall health, but could improve your chances of success when trying to lose weight.

 

Get Enough Sleep Each Night

Getting enough sleep is incredibly important. While you’re asleep, your body rebuilds and repairs itself. 

If you aren’t getting enough rest each night, your body doesn’t have a chance to properly recover—and that can affect everything from your weight loss efforts to your overall health and wellness.

 

Drink More Tea, Coffee and/or Water

While you’re busy going about your daily routine, it can be easy to forget that drinking water is one of your most important responsibilities as a healthy person. 

Remember to drink at least one cup of water for every 15 pounds of body weight you have each day. 

And remember, it doesn’t matter if you choose coffee or tea in addition to that—just make sure it has no calories!
